“Seeing might not be believing”.
Whether of an elderly woman sitting in front of her newspaper/bus ticket stand, an indigenous elder napping by the bus window, or a huddle of men chatting at the cattle market, photos and essays from Hui-Long Chen’s “Our Corners” captures a familiar—even intimate—quality in his subjects during 1980’s Taiwan. Rendering them in black-and-white, he imbues them with a timeless quality, conveying reverence for vanishing rural heritage amidst a rapidly changing country.
Just like his novels, Chen’s photography work is not pure realism- using grainy, dark, edgy photographs, his work holds nothing back. The photographs convey a mixture of eerie, abstract, romantic, and nostalgic nature.
This collection of photographs and essays is thought-provoking, blurring the lines between ambiguity and contradictions. Looking back at this culmination of ten years of photography around Taiwan offers us a nuanced view of the people and places that he explored.
